Santa Caterina di Pittinurri

Santa Caterina di Pittinurri

Initially, there were only a few houses, 'refuges' for the shepherds during transhumance, scattered around a small church dedicated to Saint Catherine. Starting from the mid-20th century, a gradual increase in construction transformed the small seaside village, a fraction of Cuglieri, into the renowned beach resort it is today. Santa Caterina di Pittinuri lies on dramatic cliffs, surrounded by the green hills of Montiferru, and watched over by the 16th-century Pittinuri Tower, from which the name derives and which stands on the promontory north of the village. A cove of limestone rocks, in addition to the village, welcomes and shelters a beach with golden, reddish, and black pebbles. The sea is clear and shallow, ideal for young children, while the days of the north wind make the cove a paradise for wind and kite surfers. The landscape becomes much wilder just a little further north, at Su Riu ‘e sa Ide, where limestone tongues gently slope towards the emerald-green sea.
