It is the largest volcanic complex on the Island and holds a fascinating variety of landscapes, from cliffs plunging straight into the sea to slopes gently descending towards inland plateaus. In between, there are forests, springs, waterfalls, castles, archaeological treasures, and rich wildlife. Montiferru is a massif whose perimeter extends across the territories of five municipalities: Bonarcado, Cuglieri, Santu Lussurgiu, Scano di Montiferro, and Seneghe. Its morphology is the result of lava flows from the volcano that occurred millions of years ago, which have ‘shaped’ basalt landscapes such as the cliffs on the western coast and the eastern plateaus, including that of Abbasanta. The highest peak of the massif is Monte Urtigu, at an altitude of 1050 meters: from its summit, on clear days, you can see both the island of Asinara to the north and the Sella del Diavolo along the Cagliari coastline.
